How to choose... A Shower Screen
By Nancy
The benefits of a glass shower screen
A shower screen creates a partition in your bathroom. It protects your floor, vanity and other bathroom accessories from splashes and soapy residue.
A glass shower screen offers a sleek and stylish bathroom solution. It is easy to keep clean, creates the illusion of more space and with so many varieties to choose from, there is one to suit just about any bathroom space.
Glass shower screens also come in frosted or ‘starlight’ (grey frosted)
Ok but what type of shower screen?
Semi frameless or fully frameless?
A semi frameless shower screen gives you the benefit of a traditional framed shower screen as well as a modern frameless shower screen.
A frameless shower screen has no frame at all but instead uses metal brackets to hold the screen in place. A frameless shower screen is made from thicker glass.
Fully frameless glass doors also allow you to display more of the tiling and other attractive features in the bathroom, and it is easier to clean as there no place for dirt to get trapped.
Walk in shower screen
A walk in shower screen gives your bathroom a luxurious feel.
A walk in shower screen creates a sleek, minimalist look and gives you more room to move around while in the shower. They are ideal for large or double showers or for showing off a statement shower head or feature tiling.
What’s even better is there is less to clean!
Sliding shower screen
A sliding shower screen saves more space compared to a swinging shower screen because you do not need to leave space for a swinging door.
They are available to suit almost any shower size.
You can also customize the fittings to suit your bathroom, for example you can choose matte black to match your matte black tapware.
Fix ‘n’ swing /Swinging bath screen
Is your shower over your bath tub? Then you need a fix ‘n’ swing or a swinging bath screen.
This is a glass panel installed on one edge of the bath tub designed to prevent water from splashing from the bathtub.
A swinging shower screen has one piece of glass that swings from side to side. A fix ‘n’ swing has a fixed panel of glass and then a second panel of glass on hinges.
Tips for choosing the right shower screen
1. Make sure you purchase glass that complies with Australian standards. The glass should be 10mm thick safety glass and it should be polished on all exposed edges. Ask about the product warranty to ensure you are buying a quality product.
2. Measure your walls and ensure that they are fully straight. If not, you will need a custom shower screen and a site measure.
3. Do you want nano coating? Nano coating is a special glass coating that makes it resistant to limescale, soap scum, dirt and grease. It means you will spend less time scrubbing and use less chemicals. Let your supplier know so they can arrange for you.
4. What height? A standard shower screen height is 2000mm but you can go higher if you want.
5. How do you want it to fix to the wall? A channel installation is when a metal channel is screwed to the wall. The shower screen then slips into the channel. This allows for more ‘wiggle room’ if your wall isn’t exactly straight. Some people prefer the look of metal brackets but this method has less margin for error. Most retailers will supply brackets as standard, so make sure you specifically ask for a channel if that’s what you want.
6. What type of shower base will you have? Some shower screens are not compatible with some shower bases.
Installation:
Glass is a fragile product so we always recommend installation by an experienced installer.
Shower screens can be extremely heavy and awkward to maneuver.
